The Snowdrop
Alfred Lord Tennyson (1809-1892)

Many, many welcomes,
February fair-maid,
Ever as of old time,
Solitary firstling,
Coming in the cold time,
Prophet of the gay time,
Prophet of the May time,
Prophet of the roses,
Many, many welcomes,
February fair-maid!

I suppose it should really be march maiden fair!  Snowdrops are a first welcome sign that the crocuses, daffodils, and tulip buds you see will bloom.  A member of the Amaryllis family, they’re best planted in mass since they are of such a small size (4-6 inches).
