We have all done it from time to time. Walked into a flower bed and snapped off a plant. Driven home with a bounty of plants to find something broke off. Come outside after a hard rain or wind storm to find plants laying on the ground. Had to cut back a rather unruly plant that was inching over it’s given boundary. Rather than compost them, many of these plants can either be put in water to root or be enjoyed as a “cut” flower bouquet.
Plants that will root in water:
- Coleus
- Begonia
- Ivy
- Rosemary
- Basil
- Impatiens
- Wandering Jew
- Swedish Ivy
Plants that may be unruly and make for great bouquets:
- Yarrow
- Johnny Jump Ups
- Echinacea
- Sunflower
- Love in a Mist (seed pods are especially cool looking)
- Fern
- Aster
- Mums
- Snapdragons
- Calendula
- Cosmos
- Black Eyed Susan
Don’t cry over broken flowers, enjoy them further.
