Yellow Finches

Today I got a late start in the garden.  Figuring that it was cloudy and cooler, I could sleep in and the containers wouldn’t perish.  Much to my dismay, squirrels, of course, had knocked over a planter and crushed the plants growing below.  This is the epic, constant battle, me vs. squirrel.   While picking up the planter, replanting the insides, and trying to revive the plants that got bombed from above, I noticed two yellow finches coming to have lunch.  Made my day!

Yellow finches, also known as gold finches or American finches, mostly enjoy thistle seed, but today they snacked on columbine, flax, and avens seed.  I had to zoom and then crop to get these photos, so please excuse their fuzziness.
